Last blog and unit test of Human Geo

Today is a sad day, we end Human Geo with Mr.Schick. Thankfully this is my last blog and I took my last Human Geo test today. I studied with my dad last night for about 30 minutes and he helped me make up some tricks so that I could memorize information for each of the 5 religions. For example Islam has five letters in it and it follows the 5 pillars, also Hinduism has 1.1 billion adherents and if you connect the ones that makes an H. I think I did pretty well but I was confused about the 7th century question. I do not remember learning about that! In conclusion I will definitely miss Human Geo and it has been a very good first half of the year.

Test review for tomorrow

Tomorrow is our last day of Human Geo:((( and of course we are going to spend it taking a test. Today we spent the class asking Mr. Schick what kind of questions were going to be on the test. We found out that there are 25 questions and each of them ask a question then you bubble in either A,B,C,D,E. Each A,B,C,D,E have a religion assigned to them so the multiple choice answers never change. In conclusion I definitely need to Study Hinduism and Buddhism because I keep getting there information confused. Out of all the religions I think I know christianity the best probably because I am catholic lol. It was very interesting to learn about the different religions that people follow. Also who there founder is and what different types of rules they have to follow in order to be a considered a follower of that religion.

Paragraphs on each major religion

Christianity: 

Christianity is the biggest Religion in the world with just about 2.2 billion adherents. A majority of these adherents are located in Europe, the Americas and Southern Africa. Although all of these people practice Christianity they all do not practice the same denomination of it. In Christianity the most popular denominations are Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Protestants ( Lutherans, Methodists, Baptist, Anglicans, Presbyterians, Episcopalians and many more). All of these denominations have the same base though. They believe in the Bible, Jesus is both divine and human, he is the son of god, he led a virtuous life; he was crucified, died, buried and resurrected. But only catholics have a clergy. The pope is the head of the Catholic Church and priests are local authorities.

Islam:

Islam is the second largest religion in the world with 1.5 billion adherents. The places with the largest number of adherents to Islam is Indonesia, North Africa and The Middle East. Instead of calling them Islam's you would call them Muslims. Unlike Christianity's many denominations Muslims only have 2 different denominations, The Sunnis and The Shiites. The Sunnis make up most of Islam's people with about 75-90% of Muslims and the remainder being Shiites. Both denominations believe that Muhammad was there founder and they follow the Qur'an. They are monotheistic and have the five pillars. Muslims see their purpose in life as serving and submitting to Allah (God) and observing Islamic law. 

Hinduism:

Hinduism is the third largest religion in the world with 1.1 billion adherents. We call them Hindus for short and most of their adherents reside in India and Nepal. The holy book that they follow are the Vedas or eternal truths revealed to ancient sages; composed in verse form so that they can be sung, and easily memorized. The four Vedas are Rig-Veda, Sama-Veda, Yajur-Veda, and Atharva-Veda. Hindus have no distinct founder but they have a series of intellectual or philosophical points of view. 

Buddhism:

Buddhism has a large range of numbers of adherents. The range is between 500m million and 1.5 billion Buddhists. Most of these Buddhists live in Southeast Asia, China, Nepal and Japan. There are also 1.2 million Buddhists in the United States alone. They follow there founder Siddhartha Gautama and also have a few denominations like Christianity. Some denominations that they have are Tibetan, Zen, Thereavada and Amidst. They do have two different things that they also believe is a good way to live life, The Four Noble Truths and The Eight Fold Path.

Judaism:

Judaism is the ninth largest religion in the world with 14-18 million adherents. Most of the adherents live in Israel and the United States. They have the Torah and they are monotheism and believe that god is one and is concerned with mankind. They also follow the 10 commandments and 13 principles of faith. 

Bible game

In Human Geo yesterday we played a game where we had to guess whether or not a statement was from the bible or the Qur'an. It was really hard and mr. schick made us get majority right. If we got three wrong then we would have to restart from the beginning. It took the class about 7 or 8 times to complete the test with most of the questions right. Right after we did that I had to leave class so I that I could go to my basketball game at Saint John's Catholic prep. It was a 2 hour drive there and sadly we lost :((((

Hinduism and Buddhism

The founder of Buddhism is Siddhartha Gautama who was born in 563 B.C. At age 29 Gautama left his palace one night and lived in a forest for 6 years, thinking and experimenting with forms of meditation. Gautama emerged as the buddha the "awakened or enlightened one"and spent 45 years preaching his views across India which sparked the religion Buddhism. On the other hand, Hinduism has unknown origins. Elements of Hindusim may have originated in the exodus valley civilization which flourished between 2500 B.C. and 1500 B.C. Some rituals from this era survive in contemporary Hinduism, including worship of various gods representing Earth, atmosphere, and sky.

What is going to be on the unit test next week

Next week in Human Geo we have our last test before we switch to western civilization. I am going to list some of the things that we underlined in class from our packet. More than 90 percent of Latin Americans and more than 75 percent of Europeans and North Americans identify themselves as adhering to Christianity. Muslims compromise more othan 90 percent of the population of Central Asia and of southwest Asia and North Africa. In Europe muslims account for 5 percent of the population. France has the largest muslim population about 4 million.

Vedic texts, Martin Luther and Hajj

1. There are four basic Vedic texts in use by Hindus. Give a brief description of each, including how many hymns are in each

The four basic Vedic texts that Hindus use are Rig-Veda, Sama-Veda, Yajur-Veda and Atharva-Veda. Each of the four have a different meaning but somewhat of the same structure. Rig-Veda means "Knowledge of the Hymns of praise" for recitation, Sama-Veda means the "Knowledge of the melodies" for chanting, Yajur-Veda means "Knowledge of the sacrificial formulas" for liturgy, and Atharva-Veda means "Knowledge of the magic formulas" named after a kind of group of priests.

Indulgence is the Roman Catholic Church granting full or partial remission of sins. Martin Luther began to question some of the catholic faith teaches when he was very young. He didn't know if what the priests said could be justified. So he began to write down everything he thought about the catholic church. Then later without telling him someone published his private thoughts and showed everyone. The pope expressed disapproval of him which made him even more mad at the Catholic Church. He was found Quilty of heresy and he refused to accept the charges. Martin Luther did not think that we should be remission for certain types of sin which led to Lutheranism.

3. The Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca is called the Hajj. Describe the details of the Hajj, and include a photo of a Hajj in your blog.

The hajj is a place where Islams are expected to walk to at least once in there life. It takes about 5-6 days to complete the journey.

Cia world Facebook- 5 major religions

Using the CIA world Factbook I was able to rank 5 major religions of the world by the percent of the worlds population that follow them. Then I used adherents.com in order to see if the percentages are consistent. On CIA world Factbook I found that 31.4% of the world follow Christianity, 23.2% are Muslim, 15% are Hindu, 7.1% are Buddhist, 5.9% are folk religion, 0.2% Jewish and 16.4% who don't identify as having a religion. On Adherents.com I found that 33% are Christian, 21% Islam, 16% non-religious, 14% Hindu, 6% primal-indigenous, 6% Chinese traditional, 6% Buddhism, 0.36% Sikhism, and 0.22% Judaism. In conclusion the number are pretty much the same except for a few percentage points each.

Christianity and Islam

In Human Geo today we took notes on Christianity and Islam. First we took notes on Christianity which has the largest amount of adherents with 2.2 billion. Most of these adherents come from Europe, the Americas, and Southern Africa. Although it is called Christianity many people also identify by the different denominations of Christianity. For example, the denominations are Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox, Protestants (Lutherans, Methodists, Baptists, Anglicans, Presbyterians, Episcopalians and many more). We also took notes on the religion Islam. Islam is the second largest religion with 1.5 billion adherents. Most of these adherents live in Indonesia, the Middle East, and North Africa. Despite all of the denominations that Christianity has, Islam only has two. The sunnis and The Shiites.

Working on our essays

In Human Geo class today we had time to work on our Essays. I am sooooo thankful for this time because I need to redo my essay since I realized how bad and all over the place it was. I was able to get a good amount of my essay done in class but I definitely still had somethings to work on at home for it. I did my essay on Iceland, Aruba, and Zimbabwe and how they face different migration problems.

Essay for exam 1

Mr. Schick was not in class today so mrs. Gauthier was our sub. For our class time we were supposed to write our essay for the exam. The essay is do Friday. I am choosing option A because I think that its the easiest one for me today and I am most interested in that one. I am going to use the CIA world Factbook to find information on the 3 countries that I am doing. I plan on doing a European country, an island in the Carribean and an African country. In conclusion I should really be working on my essay because I haven't even started and I have a lot to do with studying for other classes exams lol.

Test on migration/podcast

We took a test today in Human Geo class. Although I completely forgot we had one until this morning I still think I did pretty well considering that I forgot. The whole front page of the test was matching. It would have a statement then you would have to match the answer to it and you could only use each letter once. For example if the statement is when someone is moving willingly. If I thought the answer was A voluntary migration then I would write A next to that statement and I wouldn't be able to use the term for the rest of the matching. The second and third pages were all multiple choice. The multiple choice was way harder then. matching. If I would have known that we had to know the dates of laws and stuff then I definitely would have studied more.

Powerpoint on the packet

In Human Geo we took notes on a powerpoint. The powerpoint was pretty much information that was in the packet that we looked at the day before but this time they took out the more important important information from the packet. Some of the important information that I wrote down is about peoples attitudes about immigrants. Most United States citizens have very strong opinions about border patrol whether it be building a wall or not. I also have information about Ravensteins options on immigration. He believed that most immigrants are adults, most are people seeking jobs without and children and that most long-distance immigrants were adult males.

Today in Human Geo we looked at a packet. The packet had facts and important information about immigrants and and migration. I wrote down the things that I thought were important in the packet. For example I wrote down information about Quotas, migration with children, Labor force, years in the United States, Distribution and the source country. Some info that I wrote down about quotas are the years that each of them were signed and what the quotas were about. The quotas were in the years 1924, 1965, 1978, and 1990. Most of these quotas had something to do with limiting the amount of people per country that could immigrate each year.

Unauthorized immigrants in the United States

In the United States we have an immigration problem. Some statistics that I found in the packet we read were about Distribution, Labor Force, Years in the United States, Children, Source Country. One of the statistics that I found about Distribution were that California and Texas have the largest numbers of unauthorized immigrants and Nevada has the largest percentage of immigrants all together. Another statistic that I found is that more than 1 half of unauthorized immigrants emigrate from Mexico and the remainder of the immigrants are evenly divided between Latin American countries and other regions of the world. The last statistic that I found is about labor force there is approximately 8 million unauthrorized immigrants that are employed in the United States.

Immigrants vs Tear gas

In class today we listened to more of the podcast on migration. The podcast was definetley biased against Trump as they used information about how he is hurting the migrants. For example they talked about how border officials used tear gas in order to make migrants settle down. Honestly I'm glad they did that. The migrants attacked the border officials so the border officials fought back. What are we supposed to just let them throw rocks at us? Then when we fight back are we supposed to feel sad or ashamed that we did? NO the migrants attacked us first and its not like the tear gas killed anyone. I am sorry, but if you want to be violent like that then face the consequences and don't act like we should feel sorry for you.

Podcast continued

We listened to more of the podcast yesterday in Human Geo. I think it is very interesting what the reporters in the podcast have said. I believe that they are biased against Donald Trump. They use facts and statistics that make him look bad. Illegal immigrants is a real problem and people need to realize that. One thing that we learned from the podcast is that Barack Obama added domestic violence to the list of reasons that the United States can grant asylum. But Donald Trump has now wanted to take that off the list. I think we should take that off of the list of reasons to grant asylum.

Podcast

We are learning about migration in Human Geo. Therefore Mr.Schick wants us to talk about current events in the world that have to do with migration. Since not many people know about what is currently going on in the world and certain events we decided top listen to a podcast in order to gather information. After gathering information then we will have a debate where some of the class will be asked to say they are for migration and the rest saying that we should limit it. Some of the information I gathered is that a problem similar to ours today occurred in the United States in 1951.The United Nations decided to try and get countries to sign off on a treaty. This treaty said that if you are facing Persecution then you should be granted asylum. There were a few requirements to be granted it though. The requirements were race, nationality, political views and social groups if you were facing groups in any of those categories then you could be granted asylum.

Interregional Migration

Interregional Migration is the permanent move from one country to another. Most of the time perceived economic betterment typically compels individuals to make interregional migrations. Interregional Migration has become bigger as the population has grown and developed. Historically, the enticement of abundant available land on the American frontier would cause Interregional Migration to the United States. But in the present, most jobs especially in services are clustered in urban areas. This causes many of the people migrated to the United States to move into big cities of economic activity. Also Westward expansion played a huge role in Migration. When Lewis and Clark found more land in the West of the United States there was more land so more people would move to the United States since they had lots of land.

Migration

Migration is the moving from one place to another whether its for 1 year or the rest of your life. There are two different types of migration. The first type is immigration. Immigration is when someone is moving into a place or country. The other type of migration is Emmigration. Emmigration is when a someone is leaving a place or country and moving to a new one. This could occur for many reasons. Whatever makes someone read is a push factor and whatever makes some one move to is a pull factor. We know this because of Ravenstein's law. Ravenstein's laws states that Most migrants relocate a short distance and remain within the country and Long distance migrants to other countries head for major areas of economic activity. These laws are mostly true because just think about it usually when someone you know moves far away they either live in or near a major city in that region, state or country.
